Abstract

Alkaloids, Tannins, Saponins, Flavonoids, Terpenoids, Steroids and Cardiac glycosides distribution in medicinal plants belonging to different families were assessed and compared. The medicinal plants investigated were: Piper longum, Cinnamomum camphora, Nyctanthes arbortristis, Achyranthus aspera, Tinospora cordofolia, Cassia tora, Ficus geniculata and Ocimum kilimandscharium. Almost all of the plants were found to contain tannin, saponin, steroids and alkaloids, but absence of terpenoids, cardiac glcosides and flavonoids were reported in few plants. The significance of the plant in traditional medicine and the importance of the distribution of these chemical constituents were discussed with respect to the role of these plants in ethnomedicine in Jharkhand. Further studies are targeted on isolation, quantification, characterization and investigation of their antimicrobial as well as pharmacological activities.
